Hi! I’m Justin McDaid,  author of “The Other Third” blog.

I manage the internal audit department of a large Midwestern higher educational institution, am a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), and an upcoming CPA candidate. I hold an MBA from the University of Kansas, and I’m currently completing a Master of Accountancy from Emporia State University.

I previously worked for the California State Auditor in both the Investigations and Performance Audit divisions. I was also a Principal Auditor for the City Auditor’s office in San Diego. I have 15 years of experience in the accounting, auditing, and fraud investigation fields, and am a fan of all things audit/investigation/compliance-related (which makes me cool, right?)

In a previous lifetime, I worked in the music industry as a tour manager, tour accountant, and audio engineer. I play the guitar reasonably well, drums rather poorly, and dance hideously. Prior to that, I worked in a wastewater treatment plant, and prior to THAT I played guitar in bar bands, installed cable TV systems, worked as a plumber’s helper, a construction laborer, and a school janitor. You know, your standard Ivy-League background.

I grew up the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains east of Sacramento, California with my younger sister and brother. We were poor and it was before Al Gore invented the Internet, so we threw rocks at each other for fun.

My favorite books growing up were The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, so that should tell you all you need to know about my social standing as a teenager.

I’m married and have four children, and I live in a doomsday bunker in an undisclosed secure location.
